If you thought the Blue Moon was rare, the full moon coinciding with the summer solstice make our June moon even rarer. 17 hours of sunlight and a full “Strawberry moon” mark the symbolism of a time of ripeness. The sweet summer fruit is ready to be picked from this moment on alongside another lunar and seasonal cycle allowing our human longings and endeavours to ripen & sweeten up for picking.
Being a yogini for many many years, I am most familiar with the concept of life force as Prana. In the last few years, I’ve broadened my scope and have gotten interested in various modalities that move, still, heal and treat the body and mind. Various terminology and concepts are used depending on the modality but really, they all boil down to the same essence: Practices that vow to understand, move and master life-force energy.
There is a french saying that goes; “Le cordonnier eat le plus mal chaussé.” Transliterates to “The shoemaker is often the one with hole in his shoes”. And so I recently have found myself in a place of energetic deficit. And so began, again, my journey to restoration and healing.
I tried Medical Qi Gong yesterday. It was a symposium held in a hotel on Hastings near Nanaimo in Vancouver. In a room full of energetic practitioners, many massage tables and many receivers, I got one of the most intense and powerful treatments of my life. As one of the 4 branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine along with Acupuncture, Herbal Therapy and Chinese Massage, it is most potent and amazing work. Much like prana, ”Qi” (pronounced chee), means air, breath of life, or vital energy that flows through all things in the universe. Much like Kriya Yoga is skill in action, ”Gong” (pronounced gung, as in lung) means the skill of working with, or cultivating, self-discipline and achievement.
Basically, Qigong is the skillful practice of applying life-force energy and learning to master it. From Martial to Medical, this is the basis of all forms of Qigong. Medical Qigong works with this healing energy by way of the power of intention and concentration to access the wisdom (jnana) within. As I lay on the massage table, the two practitioners used movement, healing sound, touch, light and meditation as they began to work their juju on me. Within moments I was experiencing & feeling the movement of Qi and sensations, colours and emotions flowing through me. I saw dark and colours at the back of my eyelids. I saw very abstract shapes and very clear pictures. I began to feel my body; aches and pains travelling and the cloak of my emotional pain body manifesting as well. I kept feeling swells of tears and heat in my eyes but the tears would not release. I expressed this and was encouraged to hiss like a snake which made way to an abundance of tears… I swear my eyes must had been holding onto those for years. The treatment felt like smooth waves, all of my old “shit” was beginning to move out and by the end, I felt different. I felt lighter, I felt shocked and tired yet joyous and hopeful. I mean I’ve had energy work before but this was different. It was extremely powerful but also gentle. Hard to explain. Like I was going through the permanent press cycle of a laundry machine but also held in the palm of a Goddess.
Important detail to mention, I showed up wearing all green that day. I’ve actually been all about green lately. The practitioner told me that since I had arrived, she kept feeling and sensing the Green Tara. The Tara is the “mother of liberation”, and represents the virtues of success in work and achievements. Green Tara is the Goddess of Compassion, the One Who Saves.
Tara or Star, governs the Underworld, the Earth and the Heavens, birth, death and regeneration, love and war, the seasons, all that lives and grows, the Moon cycles, feminine creation.Tara represents the never-ending desires that fuel all life.
Only a day before the sun stood still and stopped heading north, I feel like I did too. A return to myself, I felt the symbolism of having given so much light now time to pull some back to create and play the dynamics of change and renewal.
It is said that this 2016 solstice is one of a special year, because the solstice coincides with the Strawberry Moon, a once-in-a-lifetime occurence. Different people will respond and/or worship in various ways. In certain places like Stonehenge, some people will gather around a central candle and light theirs off it, one at a time. As I showed up at that Hotel conference room on sunday morning, I feel like I lit my candle from a huge central candle burning with Qi, Prana Compassion and Love. In an ocean of people, noise, sound and energy, something I have sought to avoid lately, I actually got to go so deep and bring back sensation, illicit insight and connect with intuition. I connected and saw myself again, felt like long time no see. And I was happy. Happy Summer, eat your berries, connect deeply.
